My Newest Toy -- The Amazon Kindle

I purchased the Kindle 3G/Wireless Special Offers e-reader a week ago. I love it!! I rarely spend money on toys. Why, I don't know, but this toy is on its way to being a necessity!

The weight is indeed lighter than most paperback books. The print is crisp, clear and easy to read even in bright light. I will eventually purchase a book light for reading in the evening when I don't feel like turning on all the lamps in the room. Font size is so easy to change and I believe it can be made large enough for even those who close to legally blind.

I've purchase two books from Amazon written by one of my favorite contemporary authors, John Gresham, and enjoying reading every word of the first. There are also free books available if one is looking to download a classic or the Bible.

Recent news releases from both Amazon and local libraries and their associations bring additional great news for those on a budget or who prefer to borrow from a library. Later this year, the Kindle will roll out access through Overdrive.

When I was deciding which e-book reader to purchase, I did look at the Nook. It is in color, has a touch screen and is library borrowing ready. I found the black and white screen Kindle with no touch screen to be lighter and to have enough features that I needed more to my liking.

In addition to the readability of the screen, ease of use, and light weight, I just love that the Kindle 3G/Wireless has free internet access. There is a browser which can be accessed from the main/experimental menus and as long as there is 3G, I can surf the web, check my various email accounts, as well as order and download books.

I'm one of those people who love to read and listen to music at the same time. The Kindle 3G/Wireless provides plenty of space for my favorite mp3s under the same main/experimental menu as the browser. The Kindle comes with a plug that separates and gives me USB access to my computer to download my music. It also charges the battery while connected to a computer. It has speakers but my earphones work even better. I didn't purchase earphones. I used the ones from my mp3 player.

In order to find these gems, I had to read up on the Kindle before purchasing. When I visited stores to compare e-book readers, it seems none of the personnel were aware that internet browsing and music were available on the Kindle.

When I purchased my Kindle, I charged it up. I haven't had to charge it again since and I've been reading and listening to music every day. In fact, the battery indicator is still showing over half charged even with the wireless access on. I do, however, power it down when I am not using it rather than allow the screensaver to run.

The cost of the Kindle will end up minimal over a very short time. The money I save on purchasing e-books rather than paperback or hard cover will add up quickly. In addition, I won't have to purge my book storage. I love keeping my books but live in a space less than 800 square feet so do not have the room to keep too many at a time.

The value of being able to order any book I want to read and then adjust the text to be comfortable for my aging eyes outweighs the cost already. While large print books are available, not everything I want to read is available in large print on paper.

If you love to read and are finding yourself doing so less and less because of the strain on your eyes trying to read what seems to be finer and finer print, don't be afraid to try the Kindle.

I love the smell of a paper bound book. I love the feel. I love turning pages. All this is lost with an e-book reader but the enjoyment of being able to comfortably read text in a font large enough I don't have to squint or stop reading every few minutes to give my eyes a rest outweighs the loss.

After all, I can still walk through a book store or a library and pick up a book, smell it and turn the pages. Then I can sit down or take a walk, sit in the sun and read from my Kindle while listening to my favorite tunes.

Easy Knitted Dishcloth

I just "re-found" this pattern. If you know how to cast on and off and perform the knit stitch, it is easy and the resulting dishcloth(s) you knit are absolutely wonderful to use in your kitchen or give as gifts.

Start by using 100% cotton yarn. I like using white or ecru just because as with anything used regularly in the kitchen sink, it should withstand bleaching and/or repeated sanitizing.

I've been using Lily "The Original Sugar 'n Cream" 4 ply worstd weight 100% cotton yarn. It is usually available at Walmart and K-Mart and very reasonably priced.

Alright here are the instructions, abbreviations first:

K = Knit; st(s) = stitch(es); tog = together; YO = yarn over; rep = repeat.

Cast on 4 sts.
Row 1: K across
Row 2: K 2, yo, K to end of row
Repeat Row 2 until there are 43 stitches on your needle.

Now to decrease:
Decreasing Rows: K1, K2 tog, yo, k2 tog, K to end of row.
Continue "decreasing row" until 4 st remain.
Cast off remaining st.

That's it. I hope you try this pattern. Let me know how it goes for you. I'll post a photo of mine as soon as I am finished. Unfortunately, all my previous cloths have gone to cloth heaven...

I have been away for quite awhile. Healing from surgeries and getting back to work in my bread and butter job full time has taken the bulk of my energy. I am hoping to get back to sharing here right after the first of the year.

Currently, I am working on making sure all my patterns/designs are ready for instant download and then setting up my own domain and website which will allow you to purchase through either PayPal or Google checkout and then download your selected pattern right away. It is definitely a work in progress but I am hoping to have the website complete and online by the first of June, 2011. What are your plans for 2011?

Notice I did not say "resolutions." These are usually gone by the 10th of January at the latest. I believe we have the best of intentions when we make resolutions but without an action plan, they do go nowhere.

Something New to Share

I've been quiet lately. The beginning of February I started back to work at my day job and I have been overwhelmingly tired at the end of each day. Even so, I've been spending some time designing new pillow cover cross stitch patterns and want to share the latest -- a series of damask patterns in some of the newer colors forecasted to be hot for this coming year. Each is currently available at my eCrater shop. I'll be uploading them to Etsy soon but there seems to be some problems this morning and it's time to climb into the shower to get ready for my work day.

Paisleys, Paisleys, Paisleys

Yay!! I return to work in February and am looking forward to it. I've never been off work so long before, except when I was being a mom.

Meanwhile, I have found great inspiration in paisleys produced in the 1960s and earlier. I've been spending some time converting these great fabrics to 14" and 16" pillow cover patterns and have listed them on both my Etsy and eCrater shops.

I'm also doing some more web design but healing slows down progress . I have received some wonderful feedback on the pillow designs. Some who have purchased them are going to add beading and make evening bags.

Even though I call these pillow cover tops, they can really be used for any inspiration you may have. I'd love to hear what you plan to do with yours and hope you will share some photos with me.

Vintage on Thursday -- My Grandmother's Jewelry

These aren't precious, in stones anyway, but certainly are to me. Among my most kitschy items from my maternal grandmother over the years are two sets of the same beaded earrings: one in hot pink and the other in hot aqua. Both are clip on and still have the original backing. Even though these were most probably bought sometime in the late 50s, I thought they were very cool in the late 60s and wore them with my self-made shift of many colors a la Twiggy.

Then there were pins! Oh yes, what was a sweater without a pin on the lapel?? For some, the glitzier the better!

Even though this pin was a bit glitzy, it also has cream or vanilla enamel and a goldtone tree. I'm surprised that I didn't wear the gold off but then plating used to be plating and today it's like new.

Last, but truly one of my favorites -- so much so, I rarely wear it. I enjoy taking it out and looking at it. I should most probably put this in a small shadow box, but I enjoy touching it too much. That's the tactile me....

Yes, it's a pin that becomes earrings in total pave crystals. My pictures do not do these pieces justice but I hope you can see and appreciate their beauty if you're a vintage lover.

What is New Wednesday? Holiday Season Forecast for Etsy, etc.

Today's article is going to be a bit short. It does look like there's some good news out there for Etsians. Today's "e-Marketing News" carries an article entitled "eBay and Etsy Will Be Popular Destinations This Holiday Shopping Season". The final paragraph is particularly hopeful:

Etsy, a source for handmade items, will also attract affluent shoppers. “Some of the better items on Etsy are really high quality and speak to the same values of craftsmanship and creativity that people usually look for in a luxury good,” Hader said. Etsy, founded in 2005, has more than doubled the value of goods sold on its site to $17.7 million in October 2009, up from $8.4 million a year earlier.

Tuesday Tools -- Great HMU Webinar & A "Breaking Down Your Costs" Worksheet

I attended Tim Adam's webinar this evening sponsored by Handmadeology University. The webinar focused on the changes occurring on Facebook and Twitter and how each can be applied to help focus on marketing. I believe the transcript should be available to us in the next few days. If it is free, I will share the link when it is ready.

Facebook's interface has changed in the past couple of weeks and for some (including me at first) it seems like it's more confusing than ever to figure out. There's now a "Live Feed" feature which I've found needs to be selected to see your friends' latest postings. What is exciting is the new Lists feature. Select "More" under the list of "stuff" on the lefthand side of the screen and one of the links is the ability to make a new list. One can separate out family from friends from fan pages and set up multiple lists from the "friends" list organized just the way that works for you. Depending on how large your friends' list is, it can take a bit to set up each list but I believe it is worth it.

Twitter now has lists too. Do you find it confusing to use the interface and figure out what you are ready and from whom? Don't feel alone! At times I'm bewildered too. In Twitter, I'm still working out an understanding of the Lists feature. I've used it to set up a couple of lists but until I figure out what it does for me, I won't bore you with how to set it up. What is really cool in Twitter is that there is currently a beta going on to add Retweet to the Reply and Trash selections next to each tweet. I'm fortunate to have been selected to use this beta and if you have, I hope you experiment with it and send feedback on what you find.

There is more but I'm a bit tired this evening. I will tell you there's something terrific being developed by Tim that should be announced within the next few days. I will announce it on Twitter and my Facebook Fan Page. So if you're not following me or would rather subscribe as a fan, please do so you don't miss the news!

Finally the really super tool I found this week so far is an excel worksheet provided free by NoadiArt who writes "The Handmade Business Blog". Her article today, "Breaking Down the Costs", includes all the math to figure these important numbers out. Don't let that scare you away, however, because she includes a very cool spreadsheet template and if you don't own excel or know any spreadsheet programs, you can still use it. It is available on Google Docs which is available free to everyone. If you don't have a Google account, set one up. There are some really good tools for everyone. Use what you find to work for you and disregard the rest.

Last week, a DVD I reserved arrived at my library. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Season 1, is very enjoyable. It is a series on HBO starring Jill Scott (the poet, singer -- love both and own books and CDs) and is located in Botswana, a small country in the southern part of Africa. If you have not viewed this series, I recommend it.

With the economy still struggling to recover, if you don't already use your local library facilities to check out books, music, videos, etc., I also suggest you check into it. A library card is still free as are the checkouts -- the very best value that I know of for quality entertainment. Many may already know but if you live outside of a city and can only check out in a county or parish library, check other close community libraries and the availability of a library card free from them also. Many local libraries have reciprocal agreements between them. For example, I live in Pierce County and have a card for this system here but I also have a free card from the King County library system which allows me to check out material at any of their libraries as well.

That way if I find something of interest not available here, I can search it, reserve it and check it out from the neighboring system. Hope this helps someone save some money and still have an almost unlimited entertainment budget for movies, music, television shows and reading.

Fab Friday -- SewZanne's Fabrics

A Salt and Battery

I was visiting Jo-Ann Fabrics yesterday looking at the flannel on sale, thinking of a gift to make for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. I found the cutest, ugliest, most perfect fabric to make her a custom quillow (I shared the tutorial for these in a previous article). Because I'm teaching myself to digitize embroidery patterns and don't own an embroidery machine, I wandered over to the sewing machine area and began browsing. As I looked at the prices, I realized for me and my budget, owning any one of these beauties is currently a mere dream. Ahh, if there were only layaway at Jo-Ann!! It is probably a good thing for most of us that there isn't .

The manager of that area of the store was in and we introduced ourselves and began talking. I still have and use my now vintage Singer Futura I purchased new in the early 1970s (pictures to be shared on a Vintage Thursday article soon). My serger is a Singer. I learned on a Singer. So throughout the past 40 or so years, I have become very partial to Singer machines. The manager, Diane (like me), showed me the CE150 which is very reasonably priced and exactly what I wish I could buy at the moment.

Babycakes

I shared that I design cross stitch, quilt and other types of patterns and have shops on both Etsy and eCrater, as well as that I'm learning to digitize. It lead to sharing our websites, blogs and the like. I explored the samples Diane had on hand and she showed me a very cute Japanese Origami style tissue holder she made. The pattern came from SewZanne's Fabrics website. It can be made with a mere fat quarter and I know I will try it soon.

Crossword Puzzle

When I arrived home, after a rest, I found SewZanne's website and besides some really great craft tutorials, I found the most interesting and fun interlock I've seen in years and it is very reasonably priced. The graphics here are but a few of the samples.

Mellow Out

I still have my original Stretch & Sew t-shirt pattern and can't wait until I can afford to buy a few of these and make some new shirts. At least I hope I can before they are sold out.

One Tough Cookie

Vintage on Thursday -- My Custom Prom Dress (1967)

I was fortunate to have both a mother and grandmother who sewed. My grandmother could make anything from a drawing and loved to sew. So each early Spring while I was in high school, she would ask me what ball gown or prom dress I wanted. I drew up a picture of exactly what I wanted, told her the colors and a couple of weeks later, I had a custom made, fully lined gown for my special occasion. I wish I had kept copies of the drawings but I have no idea what happened to them and many of the gowns disappeared through the years. I had younger sisters -- enough said?

This dress is the only one I've kept and moved with me through each stage of life. My bust and waistlines are too big to wear it and even if I could reduce my waist enough to fit, the bust part would still be a problem. Here is a photo of me in 1967 wearing the formal:

Don't you just love the short mod hairstyle and cat-eye glasses? Here is the dress today, in much the same condition as when I first wore it:

complete with big bow and chiffon train. The peau de soie is a deep blue with emerald green threads running through. The embossing which is done in the weave is roses as you can see here.

The same chiffon used for the train embellishes the three-quarter sleeves.

The bow is large and snaps across the back to cover the zipper after it is closed.

As you can see at the neckline, the dress is lined. If you've been around as long as me, I hope this bring back good memories of the mid to late 1960s that you may have and I hope you share yours in the comments below.

A couple of times I thought I might sell this dress but each time I put it back into the closet. Maybe one day I will have a grand-daughter and the style will have returned. However, I won't hold my breath while waiting .

More of my vintage next Thursday (I seem to own more than I originally thought). When I love something and enjoy it, I take care and keep it for as long as possible.

What is NEW Wednesday?

I found a new blog dedicated to Etsy sellers and products today and wondered how many more there are out there. Since Google is our friend, I decided to search "@etsy" to see what I could find. The blog that piqued my interest and curiosity is Eyes on Etsy. Each day Cameron features various products on Etsy according to theme, much like a Treasury (if you're familiar -- if not, visit Etsy at the link above and select the "Treasury" link at the lower left hand part of the page).

Now to the "googly" results :)

Not so new but interesting and fun for those who are planning a unique, distinctive wedding or just love to browse and enjoy all the aspects of a well put together, non-kitschy celebration of commitment, Etsy Wedding, has taken the time to select some of the best of the real, funny and brazen pieces parts to make your or someone else's wedding as original as it should be.

Etsy-Love is another nice looking blog with the writer's favorites featured. Posts are indexed by subject matter so it is easy to find exactly those type of items you want to view. Contact is made easy with a fill in form.

Vegan Etsy features those items which fit the strict guidelines vegans look for when shopping. The blog is colorful and full of information to educate us non-vegans. The writers are all members of Team Etsy Vegan.

There are a lot of blogs dedicated to Etsy following one subject or another. I will feature a few more next Wednesday. Muslin Angel Ornaments -- An Inexpensive Way to Trim Your Tree -- Free Tutorial

Instructions:

   1. Tear strips of muslin into pieces approximately 9" by 6". This doesn't have to be exact. The 6" (or so) measurement will be the height of your angel. You can use scissors but the finished angel looks better (in my humble opinion) if the fabric is torn.

   2. Taking the right and left corners of one 9" side, tie a knot in each of these two corners. This creates the arms of your angel as well as a pocket to make the head.

   3. Using a cottonball and some sewing thread or string, center the cotton ball in the fabric pocket between the two knots, pulling the fabric over the cottonball and then tying by wrapping the string around the base of the fabric stuffed with the cottonball to make the head and neck area.

   4. Using one of the 1/8 or 1/4 inch ribbon, tie a piece around your angel's neck and make a bow.

   5. Cut a piece of wide wired ribbon about 3 inches long and using your glue gun, affix it to the back of your angel for wings. I usually have some of that gold metallic open weave type wired ribbon on hand and I like it the best because I can stretch it out after gluing to form more lifelike wings, but do your own thing.

   6. For the halo, I use gold or copper colored small garland, the one that is wired and has stars attached, but any wire will do. Cut a small piece proportionate with the angel's head, wrap it around your finger to make a circle. Place glue on the part where your wire meets to form the circle and hold for a second or two to the top back of the angel's head.

   7. Your angel is complete! The only thing left to decide is how you want to use her. I've glued gold ribbon on her back looped to make a hanger, a pin fixing, and a piece of that magnet tape you can buy at an office supply or crafts store, but I'm sure there are other ways to use this cute symbol of peace and promise.

   8. An additional note: before you start tearing apart your muslin, it can be washed, dyed to a different color with either a commercial or tea dye.

Wowza!!! A New Tool for Etsy Sellers

I am a member of Team EtsyRain and was reading our member forum this morning (I don't read as often as I should) and read a posting by Laurie-LoudLife who is sharing a new tool she has created for other Etsians. It's called Tools for the Etsy Community - cre8tivity. Check this site out!! It is easy to use. Just type in your Etsy name and besides a beautiful interface for your stats and hearts, there are some wonderful, new helpers and widgets available.

Available under the Widgets tab right now is a Scrolling Side Bar Widget which can be added to your website, blog, anywhere you can add a custom widget. Mine looks like this:

I didn't have to type anything. The script is read to copy and paste. Not seen on my example is the widget's movement -- it moves through the items you have available in your shop, showing each for approximately 5 seconds before moving on to the next item. Very cool and professional look!

Coming soon are a Multi Product Scrolling Sidebar Ad and customizable widgets.

Under the Helper tab, there are currently three helpful ways to promote your shop and keep track of your inventory. Product Flyer only needs you to select the product from your Etsy shop (via a dropdown menu) to be included in your flyer and click on the arrow button. A pdf file in full color is then created.

There is also the Multi Product Flyer which contains 4 of your products, selected the same way, and an Inventory Helper which will download all your currently listed items into a *.csv file which will open using most spreadsheet programs.

My First Grandson Has Arrived!!

Welcome to the world, Liam. It has been a world wind of activity for me the past few weeks. Going to physical therapy, doctor's appointments and spending a bit of time with the new parents during the last few hours before they were indeed parents. It has all been exciting and tiring. I'm working on healing and doing some reorganizing so that I post more often. I have lots to share in the near future and thank you for being so patient. I am now ShoSho (grandmother in Kikuyu as my significant other says).

How To Use Digital Stamps

I received a question from a "soon to be" customer the other day asking how digital stamps can be used. I responded to the question with what little I know about the various uses and added that I intend to research and prepare some detailed tutorials for this blog to share with you but that it would take some time to begin and complete each.

With surgery on my hands beginning August 26th (starting with my left and, yes, I'm a southpaw) and then the right side sometime around 6 weeks after the first surgery if healing goes well, I will be doing more reading and research on this during the next 3 or so months and begin to write individual tutorials on each use I discover after all is healed and my doctor gives me clearance.

Meanwhile, since Google is our friend, I spent a few hours researching, reading and compiling some links that I think will help anyone who wants to explore the various creative outlets and uses for digital stamps.

I hope you enjoy these and if you know of others that are easy to understand and follow as well as complete, please share them here with me and others by leaving a comment. I will check them out and comment back.

There are lots more instructional and tutorial type websites out there but these are the ones I read and/or watched and found to be easy to follow and understand.

Making A Butcher Paper Stencil Tutorial -- Great Use for Chinese Symbols/Kanji and other Digital Stamps

I was browsing the web earlier this morning ... yep tooo early but I had a spinal injection yesterday and while I'm not in the pain I was I am uncomfortable and now dealing with the little and weird things steroids do to our body. Anyway, I've gotten off my subject (smile).

While Googling, I found this really terrific idea and "how to" on making stencils from butcher block paper. The sample used in this tutorial is an ampersand on a pencil skirt. Very unique and interesting and cool idea I thought.

Butcher paper is inexpensive as are my digital stamps and other sellers as well that are listed on Etsy. There is a tremendous amount of variety and you will probably find exactly the graphic to use to stencil and applique on one of your handmade or store-bought garments to embellish and update the look.

Viewing this tutorial got my brain daydreaming of all the items this particular idea can be instrumental in creating. Appliques on kitchen or bath towels to monogram or add to an Eastern theme, sweat or sweater sets with complimentary or continuing designs, and on and on.... I can't wait until my hands are in good enough shape again to experiment more with these ideas! I had to share this so I can come back and get the creative juices flowing again in a couple of months!

A Gift From Afar

I recently received this wonderful kiondo bag handmade in Kenya by a member of the Kikuyu tribe as a gift from the man in my life. It is a beautifully crafted piece which was woven and put together completely by hand in sisal and leather. The photos I include don't do it justice. I am honored to be the recipient and in love with the bright red and turquoise with the offset natural and black colors. In Swahili, the name is chondo. I wonder how much we miss of truly unique and beautiful crafts available from artisans working somewhere in the continent of Africa because of the lack of free availability of technology and education on how to use it ...

I just won an Alchemy bid on Etsy for 3 very different but wonderful charts/patterns for cross stitch and needlepoint. The customer is making pillows as gifts, doing the needlework first and then assembling the pillows. I can't wait to see photos of her finished projects and will share them with you as soon as I receive them.

I am proud of the way each turned out and am happy to have had the opportunity! Each pattern is between 17" to 19" square. The patterns are delivered in pdf format in 8.5" x 11" size with overlap placement lines when the pattern is larger than what will fit on one page. While the patterns I usually create are about 12 point in size on the page, a larger point size can be created just for you. How to Create A Quilt From Ready Made Blankets

I was visiting the MixxMade forums this morning and responded to a request for help on how to turn to "ready made" blankets into a quilt. Here is my answer. I figured if one person is asking, others might want an answer as well .

Wash and dry the 2 new fleece or other fabric blankets. Do so to make sure you're not going to go to all this work and have them fall apart on you. It will also take care of any shrinkage so make sure you dry them as you will once the quilt is made.

You can use batting or not depending on how "fluffy" you want the quilt to be and the type(s) of blankets being used. If so, layer as follows:

1. Top right side up
2. Batting
3. Back right side down

Pin around 3 sides leaving one of the sides open (leave the shortest side open). Stitch around all 3 sides pinned (seam allowance will depend on what measurements you want the completed item to be). Trim the edges. I find with fabics this thick it helps to stagger the width of the seam allowance which means trimming each layer's selvage separately. Clip the corners diagonally but first double stitch the corners. Turn the quilt, ironing the seams if necessary. I find it also is good to iron the entire quilt to flatten to tie. Just be careful to not stretch the fabric. Steam and lift the iron to move rather than sliding it. Turn in the edges of the open end, press, pin and sew closed either by hand on or by machine.

Finally find some colorful colorfast yard and using a yarn needle, tie the quilt using double square knots in several places to secure the batting and fabric together. You can create a design or follow the design on the quilt top. YouTube has several how to videos available to walk you through other types of knots and more specifics on how to hand tie a quilt. Voila!! You have a new quilt!!

A Heartfelt Thank You for Featuring My Design

I recently joined MixxMade, a new indie community for all of us who handcraft and either sell our wares or like to share how to and what we create with others. One of my first "friends" is pepper2 who has 2 shops of handmade at Etsy (aka Kathy). She complimented me on my cross-stitch designs and we began a discussion and a new friendship writing back and forth about how I might be of help and what I would need to create using my existing Chinese symbols to allow non-cross stitchers to use them for embroidery and other interesting projects.

There was a lot of hit and miss on my part. As wonderful as this electronic way of communication, there are limitations at times that nothing like a face to face and being able to share first hand in real life can compare. Even so, I continued to edit and change and send samples to Kathy for her review and critique. I finally got it, I think, and yesterday Kathy posted a blog with a photo of the embroidery project she is working on using the freedom digital stamp I created just for her. A different style is available in my Etsy shop.

New Affiliation -- Beautiful & Unique Photographic Blank Greeting Cards

I'm still not working at my day job and waiting to see a spine specialist for consultation and evaluation. I know what my MRI showed and things don't look good for me working at a desk for long periods of time again. So this is being put together a few minutes at a time. One has to keep busy either mentally or physically to stay calm and in the present -- at least that's what I have to do .

In speaking with my dear friend and mentor, Darla Woodworth, the other day, we began talking about her camera and computer work and the beautiful and unique greeting cards she created a few years ago. I've been honored to receive a set as a thank you in the past and am too selfish to send any of them to someone else. Darla used to have a website of her own but demands of work and life in general took their toll, as they often do for all of us and she eventually pulled the site.

I asked her if she had any of the greeting cards left. She laughed and said "scads!" So I asked her about allowing me to list them in my Etsy shop and share them with others. We discussed it a bit and came to an agreement and ... ta da!!! ... today I've listed the four different sets she offers, shipping included in the price!

Sharing -- Article about Social Networking & How It Can Help Your Small Business

I'm still pretty much out of commission for now. I can't sit for long enough periods of time to write a decent length blog without too much pain. I had an MRI earlier this week and the results are lumbar disc degenerative disease and arthritis. My doctor is referring me to a spine specialist. Thank goodness for successful children. My son is setting up a wireless network for me and bringing me a laptop. Once I figure out if I can type and lay down at the same time, I will get back to regular blogging .

While reading I found this article in Costco Connection about social networking sites and how to use them for marketing during these tough economic times. I use Twitter and am planning setting up a FaceBook fan page. While this article is not an "in depth" study, it does discuss a lot of sites I have yet to explore. I hope you find something here of value to help you keep your business not only afloat, but successful, until the tides once again turn.

Free Software I Use To Create My Designs & Patterns -- Part 2

To edit the pages of a pattern I create to add my copyright, titles and other verbiage in the font I like, I need to convert original pdf files printed from my creation software to a graphics format from "pdf". I have used a variety of free programs from pdf995. All are very good, but include ads that pop up and, sometimes when their servers are busy, the ads take forever and slow me down.

Irfanview takes care of this perfectly! It is another free graphics software that has a lot of ability, most of which I have not taken the time to discover. There are lots of articles on the web on how to use this freeware. One day I will take the time to see what else it can do for me. Right now, I use it to save my "pdf" files printed from my pattern creation software as "tif" files to open in my old graphics program, PaintShopPro 5 (I would provide a link but this program was purchased by Corel years ago and is no longer available). I've had this piece of software for years and paid for it. I learned to use it when I was creating my genea logy website to create the backgrounds, buttons, banners and other graphics I used there. If you're like me at all, it is difficult sometimes to take the learning curve time necessary to become expert at something new when that something old is working well .

To convert a "pdf" file to a "tif" file in Irfanview is easy. Select "File", "Save As" and the file type. There are several different settings to select from but if the end goal is to have a individual "tif" file to edit from each page of the "pdf" file, none of them need to be changed. The resulting "tif" file will appear as one file but when opened in your graphics program will become separate graphics for each page that was originally in the "pdf" file.

When I create quilt and quilt block patterns that I have freehand drawn, there are sometimes some wild sewing lines created by the algorhythm of the software I use. Using Irfanview to create "tif" files and then opening them in my graphics file allows me to clean these up and redraw appropriate lines instead, as well as add the aforementioned copyright text and update fonts.

I hope these articles give you some ideas to help you design your own patterns or for other uses in your daily work and play. Remember, my patterns, as well as custom orders, are always available at my Etsy shop, DPeaGreenDesigns.

Free Software I Use To Create My Designs & Patterns -- Part 1

I have purchased the software I use to actually create my counted cross-stitch and quilt patterns and translate for my Chinese Symbol/Kanji patterns. However, to clean up the design and to create and edit the patterns to a final excellent product, I use several free software programs. During the next week or so (or until I share all of them), I will be blogging this subject.

If you are like me and either new to or thinking of starting an online business creating items which can be delivered by email, I hope this information is helpful to you. There are so many freeware programs out there, it is sometimes overwhelming to choose. However, if like me, you don't have hundreds to thousands of dollars to spend on software, these programs may be exactly what will help you move to the next step in your goals.

Even though my translation software creates good quality symbols, the resulting graphic is raster and I can create a cleaner pattern from the start using a vector graphic. To read more about raster vs. vector graphics, Wikipedia has an excellent article.

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and CorelDraw do this but cost hundreds of dollars. Vector Magic used to be free but is no longer and if you create lots of design graphics, can also cost in the hundreds of dollars. I found that Inkscape does a more than adequate job of vectorizing a raster image.

Of course, a poor quality image is not going to give a good result no matter what software is used, but Inkscape also has many of the options available in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to trace and add layers to correct a poor quality graphic to better quality or to redraw it from scratch. One can save graphics in SVG format to edit or create different sizes later and also export to "raster" image formats.

The downside to this software is that if you have never used a professional graphics program, learning to use Inkscape can be challenging. There is no one "simple" manual available and a lot of what is written for the user from the site is more understandable by an experienced user or "techie". There are, however, lots of mini-tutorials available free on the web to learn how to create different graphics and text options which will teach one how to use the program. Google is our friend!

NEWS FLASH!!: There are two new "how to" Inkscape books available for pre-order from Amazon.com: The Book of Inkscape by Dmitry Kirsanov was published May 28, 2009, and Beginning Inkscape by Donna Benjamin, is scheduled to be published November 1, 2009.

I have not been able to view any of the contents of either book though I will be ordering The Book of Inkscape next payday. I will write a review once I do receive the book and have an opportunity to see if it is easy for a novice designer to decipher. If you are a book author and have written a help book for Inkscape, please email me so I can share this with others. The more options available to users, the better!

Tomorrow I will share details about another graphics freeware program I use to create my finished patterns.

Sunbonnet Sam -- From the Past to the Present

I shared the news recently about my first grandchild. Yesterday I shared an ultrasound photo of his perfect feet.

Today I share the quilt I am finishing for him. My maternal grandmother, Lucy Moore, began this quilt sometime in the 1950s when my mother was pregnant with one of us. Alas, we all turned out to be girls so my mother took the blocks made by my grandmother and pieced them together but never finished it.

She made a quilt from clothing of my childhood for my son. She had saved some of my dresses and coats I had outgrown and put them in a hope chest. When I got pregnant, she took her favorites I had worn as a baby and toddler and created a crazy quilt for my son. He still has that little quilt.

She gave me this quilt over a decade ago to finish one day and I put it away. I had almost forgotten about it until my son and daughter-in-law shared their wonderful news a few months ago.

I am working on some quilting templates for the squares and will machine quilt all but one square which I've asked the new mommy to complete. Then I will bind it and add a custom label which I'm designing which will document the four generations of loving hands which created this "masterpiece". I will share a photo of the finished quilt and label once it is completed.

New Life

Happy Wednesday! I hope your week is going well. I've mentioned it before but just in passing -- I'm going to be a first-time grandma in the Fall. A couple of weeks ago, my son and daughter-in-law found out they are having a healthy baby boy. It is exciting to watch their lives change bit by bit each day as the reality of becoming parents gets closer and closer.

The pictures from the ultrasound came out so well. It is sometimes hard to believe how far technology has come since I was pregnant. Amazing! My grandson in the making is a mover and shaker and Momma has already felt the hiccups.

I was perusing books on cross-stitching at my library and on Amazon.com and have come across some more interesting books on unique subjects to cross stitch.

If you enjoy fantasy, fairies, dragons and lore, you might enjoy Bewitching Cross Stitch by Joan Elliott.

If art nouveau is your interest, this book may include patterns you won't be able to resist. Cross Stitch Art Nouveau by Barbara Hammett includes over 70 designs in this style.

Celtic Art in Cross Stitch, also by Barbara Hammett, includes over 75 amazing Celtic designs. Amazon.com has a preview of the book available.

Finally, Cross Stitch Fairies: Over 50 Enchanting Designs by various authors has some really beautiful and whimsical fairies. There is also a preview of this book available at Amazon.com.

Etsy has a wonderful way to discover new shops and shops which have not yet had a sale. It's called "Pounce". I was browsing and found the following interesting and new items and shops.

ellepic is a shop which opened March 27th, 2009. The offerings include a beautiful Persian Termeh je welry pouch for $17.00.

MyWoo dTurning just opened yesterday. So far there is one item listed -- a certified Bethlehem Holy Land Olive Wood Pen and Pencil Set.

DisLil Treasures is another new shop in the Etsy mall. She has a variety of items but the crocheted baby booties caught my eye as well as her e-book "How to Learn to Read Crochet Patterns". Since I'm going to be a first-time grandmother this fall, I couldn't help but fall in love with the "Handmade Crochet Baby Booties-Weste rn Cowboy Boots". These are darling and I'm sending the link to my daughter-in-law to share.

If you haven't used Pounce while on Etsy, I encourage you to do so. There are so many talented artisans and craftpeople selling on Etsy and you might find an item you can't live without !

I Want to Learn to Cross-Stitch -- How Do I Get Started?

I've been cross-stitching and doing other needlework since I was a young girl and sometimes forget not everyone had the opportunity to learn as I did from the elder women who wanted to pass down their knowledge so took the time and had the patience to teach me and my sisters. Cross-stitch is one of the easiest needlework crafts to learn and yet can be just complicated enough to be frustrating for a beginner.

Having the internet is a great tool when there is not a person to teach or a class available within our means or scheduled for a time we can attend.

The Yarn Tree has excellent "Learn How to Cross-Stitch" instructions which includes a simple pattern to use.

Twisted Thoughts -- My NEW Cross-Stitch Pattern Series

The same simple but elegant Chinese symbols/Kanji as my other patterns but represents what I call "Twisted Thoughts". If you don't tell, no one will know -- well, except for someone proficient with the Chinese language!

Whether you've had a bad breakup or want to send a subtle message to another, I hope this series brings a smile to your face and chuckle to the back of your throat :)

Want to Schedule Your Tweets?

There are more and more free and paid services that allow a Twitter user to schedule tweets throughout the day. All are fairly easy to use. One of the newest, just gone alpha, is Twaiter. It is free for personal use; a business account which is limited to 500 tweets per month is also currently free. From their "about" page:

The only downside I've found so far is that once a tweet is scheduled, it cannot be edited if errors are found or you want to make a change. It has to be deleted and re-written.

I like that one can schedule Tweets from the control panel or use the "Outlook" inspired calendar to enter and schedule. Tweets can be scheduled hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and set to send once, a number of times or regularly with no end.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this service develops and hope you enjoy trying and using it. Let me know what you think...

Twisted Thoughts -- A New Series of Cross-Stitch Patterns in Chinese Symbol/Kanji

I am working a new series of Chinese Symbol/Kanji cross-stitch patterns and will begin uploading some to my Etsy shop within the next few days as they are ready.

These are all "mature" content. Each contains the beautiful, elegant symbols that my original patterns do but each also has a twist in meaning. What do you think this symbol means? Check my shop on Saturday and you will find out ...

The idea sprung from a conversation I had with a potential Alchemy client who was looking for something to cheer her up after a bad break-up, a rough week with mom, and upcoming college finals. We wrote back and forth -- as we did, the idea for this new series formed and I hope you will enjoy it in the spirit in which it is offered.

I will share more about our conversation when I announce the introduction of this series on Saturday morning.

Learning Opportunity for My Fellow Etsians!!!

If you have an Etsy shop and want to expand, learn some fantastic networking tools which will increase traffic to you and your handmade items and eventually bring more sales and haven't heard of Timothy Adams, please let me introduce you to this amazing entrepreneur. What I like about this young man is his willingness and desire to share with others what he has learned while building his Etsy business and other artistic endeavors. I'm a big believer is the "reap and sow" of life -- in other words, "what goes around, comes around..."

I won't tell you Tim's story but let his new video introduction do that. There's nothing like hearing it straight from the source !

A free 5-day introductory course was offered and is still available (see below the video and introductory text for the links to each). I recommend it highly to any Etsian who is wanting to learn more how to do business and sell their handmade art/crafts/items to an expanding client base.

I received all 5 days, read each, tagged and highlighted more helpful tips than I have been able to get to in the past 10 days. Of those I've been able to implement, the results are amazing! I have much more to work on and have had to take a few days off to attend a training for my day job. It will be interesting to look at my figures over the weekend after almost a week of not networking -- it's all a learning curve.

While I can't prove it unequivocally, when I first began using Timothy's tips in his 5-day course, I had sold 15 items. As of today, the sales have increased to 30 items. That was an unexpected happy surprise!

My plan was to work my business and develop it so that when I retire from state service, I can still work at something I have passion for and enjoy. That is still my plan but I can see the time line may move up drastically using what I learned in 5 short days.

Converting to PDF -- Freeware

When I started to develop my ideas from imagination to screen, one of the issues I needed to solve was how to deliver the final product in a way that is fast, easy, doesn't detract from quality and free. I couldn't afford to invest in Adobe software. I found several freeware products and tried them each.

My favorite -- Primo PDF. It downloads as a printer driver so that you can select to print a pdf from any program you access your regular printer. There are no ads, other than a static one for the paid version called Nitro. This doesn't slow down the process as it does with other freeware I tested.

The pdf files created can be optimized for screen, print, e-book or pre-press. The author can also decide whether others can copy and/or edit, as well as print and the quality of the print, and password protect the new pdf file. There is a very nice user manual available for viewing online. It is also downloadable as a pdf file.

New pages can be appended to an already existing pdf document so if you are creating pieces of the document from various software, it is easy to create one pdf file from various sources.

Pdf files can be set to conform to either Adobe 1.4 or 1.5 specifications. The downside is that this freeware is only available for Windows computers at this time. However, PrimoOnline, is also available which allows conversion to a pdf file online which is then sent to you by email -- all for free!

Etsy Shops I Adore -- More of My Favorites

There are so many unique and imaginative artisans showing their creations on Etsy. Today I include three more of my favorites, each offering varied selections. I hope you visit each and find something you just can't resist!

Bear Creek Creations (bearcreekcreations) offers customized shirts. Each has a different quilt block design. They are beautiful and meticulously made. The quilt pieces are set into the inside of the shirt and then the front is cut away to reveal the pattern -- almost like cut work! The result is a shirt with dimension. Prices start at $24 -- very reasonable for a one-of-a-kind custom shirt!

Hiphazard is a new shop (since 1/09) to Etsy and also sells shirts but none are a shirt you're going to find in a local store. I will warn you if you are easily offended, it is probably best to pass, but if you have a wonderfully twisted, irreverent sense of humor, you will find shirts with art that will make you chuckle and may find you have to click that purchase button! The cost is $15.60 for each shirt. I hope check out this new find!

Sekhments Treasures offers handcrafted jewelry. As well, they will do custom work taking your vintage and old pieces and make something new and unique just for you. My favorite section is the "10 and Under Free Ship" section. The offerings include earrings, both pierced and clip style, necklaces, all are as the section title implies -- $10 or less and no cost to ship!

I am working on a new series of cross-stitch patterns for my shop as we speak -- the same elegant Chinese Symbols and Kanji but with a twist as well. More on this later.

Happy Thursday everyone! Tomorrow I get to see my new grandbaby on the ultrasound! My son and daughter-in-law have invited the new grandparents to join them at this appointment. We may find out whether we will have a boy or girl but the really exciting news is that the tests to check for genetic problems and birth defects have all come back and I am going to be the grandmother of a healthy baby! What a blessing!!

Tips -- Software to Create Your Own Cross-Stitch Patterns

When I first started to design, I found a free program which is still available and being updated by its author on a fairly regular basis. KG-Chart for Cross-Stitch is easy to use and the newest version (1.09.06) was introduced on March 29, 2009. The downside is you will need to be adventurous because there is presently no instruction manual available in English. It is in the process of being translated. The author does have a new blog and there is a new forum to share information and ask questions of other users. If you've been designing your patterns by hand using graph paper and pencil, try this software out. It won't cost anything and you might find it a great alternative.

When I could afford to spend a bit, I purchased PC-Stitch. It is normally around $80 but I joined PatternsOnline (which is free) and found a coupon which reduced the price by $20! There are instructions included but some are general in nature and assume one is not only computer savvy but also can read "between the lines". The way to do most edits and changes is much simpler though than most of us originally think. I have the habit of making things more complicated than necessary at times! There is customer help, including an extensive forum. There are two versions: PC Stitch Pro and PC Stitch Standard, which is $39.95 to purchase. Free evaluation downloads are available for both so that you can try it out before purchasing.

I like both of these and use them to make patterns from my designs. If you want to make patterns for your own use and/or to sell, I hope you will try one or both and share your experience on both the product's forum and here for others to benefit from your experience.

A Crazy Quilt Block Pattern For You -- Free

Yesterday I shared some books about crazy quilting. Last night, I designed a basic foundation piecing crazy quilt block to help you get started.

Happy Tuesday! It's been storming and the wind has been blowing all night but I slept well and am looking forward to a busy day at work as well as one of accomplishment. As a dear work friend of mine often says: "Another day to reach for excellence at our chosen profession." I chuckle when I say this to myself. When said by my friend, it was an acerbic statement -- even still, this friend, as well as I and my many co-workers strive to do just that each day.

I drew the quilt block in Electric Quilt 5 ("EQ5") using EasyDraw, so if you have any version of this wonderful software, try drawing one yourself. Remember to keep the lines few and simple. The intricacy of a crazy quilt is in the combination of fabrics, prints, laces, buttons and other accoutrement.

A New Quilting Attitude -- Books for Quilters Who Want To Make A Noise

Quilting is fun and challenging for me and I spent several years working on different quilts. All have been gifted to those who fell in love with them, except my second quilt which had more mistakes than perfection. After I completed it, I made shams, pillows, swags and jabots all to coordinate and redecorated the master bedroom of my then-home. It was beautiful, even with the imperfections. Most who visited admired the entire room, never honing in on any of the quilting non-perfection I seemed to see every day.

One day about a year after all was completed, my then-husband's dog was left home with me instead of going on the road with his "dad". It ticked him off. I came home from work two days later to one square in my quilt, smack dab in the middle, bitten into shreds with the batting in pieces spread over the rest of the bed. Amazing how a 6" square of batting can be shredded and expand to seem like a bushel full!

I was horrified and more than a little angry!! I remember picking it all up yelling at nobody -- the dog sure wasn't listening. He turned tail and disappeared into the back yard...

Then I gathered myself together and reconstructed that square by hand. As I was doing this, I realized for the first time that I was making a piece of history and memory for myself. That was 15 or so years ago and when I divorced, I brought my quilt and all the accessories with me. They are still in my bedroom decorating the space I call my own. Today, when I need to clean or refold this quilt and see the center square, the memory of that time and of the incident brings a smile and warmth to my being. Time does indeed change things for the better if we allow it.

Today's book reviews are for quilters who are ready to try something different. I've been designing quilt block and quilt patterns of late but think it is about time to begin making another quilt. I want something new and challenging -- something with attitude to reflect the me that has evolved over the last 5 years of singlehood.

Crazy Quilting with an Attitude by Barbara Randle has wonderful writing, great photos and some really beautiful projects, many with a Victorian but modern feel. Take a look inside her book here.

Crazy Quilts: History-Techniques-Embroidery by Cindy Brick/Nancy Kirk is a fun visit to the history, how to and various embellishments to this genre of quiltmaking. There are some wonderful stories and photos of crazy quilts of yesteryear which can motivate one's creative juices. Take a look inside and you may find a book you want to add to your reference library.

Finally, if you enjoy the first Barbara Randle book on crazy quilting, this one may be an add too. Barbara Randle's More Crazy Quilting with Attitude contains 14 new projects, each with an attitude of its own! There isn't a look inside feature at Amazon but the cover photo is enough to make me curious to see more!

...a song which reminds me to take a moment to breathe and enjoy the quiet moments life offers so early in the morning.

Happy Sunday! In one week we celebrate a formal Mother's Day. At the moment, I have no plans. Don't think, "poor thing" for a minute! Every day is Mother's Day for me. I'm blessed to not only have a son who loves me and is devoted to my well being but several step-children, nephews and others not related by blood or marriage who care for me and show it in an individual way. It is a blessing to have so many children of mine "conceived and birthed by another mother" consider me a friend and confidante.

It is because of these many relationships that I got the idea to design cross-stitch patterns using Chinese symbols/Kanji as the subject. I looked around at all the these young adults I know, as well as observing others while taking walks on Ruston Way and the mall. I noticed a lot of tattoos with symbols that only to the wearer had meaning. After seeing so many, I thought what a wonderful way to bring an "old school" craft to a new generation in a way that would interest as well as bring enjoyment to them and resurrect a fun and easy type of needlework.

So far, many of my cross-stitch patterns have been purchased by young adults but what I also find terrific is that their mothers, dads, grandmothers and others who love them are finding my patterns and purchasing them to make handcrafted items for their own children and grandchildren.

It took about 4 months of intensive work to figure out how to convert English words to these symbols and to then make simple but elegant patterns from them. During this time there was a lot of stop, start, back up, move forward -- at times exhilarating and others frustrating. Then, it took about the same amount of time to figure out how to deliver a quality pattern in an affordable manner and deliver it without fuss or wait.

This has been and continues to be a wonderful journey for me. I am learning each day something new or how to work a different way!

How To Friday -- Making Balt Salts in a Bag

There's nothing like coming home from a long day to a nice, freshly drawn bath just hot enough to relax and with just the right combination of emollients and aromatics to soothe both the body and the spirit from a busy week! This version is my own and makes the skin so soft and body relaxed enough, it is ready for a good night's sleep and a terrific weekend!

Instructions

To Make the Bag:

1. Cut 7" by 11" strips of muslin cloth. Fold the 7" side and sew a 1/2" seam. This should leave you with a 3" wide, 11" long tube.

2. Fill tube with between 1/4 cup and 1/3 cup of bath salts or other filler. Fold in half and shake the salts down.

3. Fold the open ended side into envelope corners (forming a point) and then fold that section down to seal the open ends of your bag. A portion of the raw edge may show through and I've used my serger to finish these off after folding and filling the bag which also helps to seal the salts in. There are several ways to secure the top. I take a piece of jute string or twine about 2 feet long if I'm making a bath bag, shorter for hanging potpourri, and tie a knot in each end. I then use my sewing machine on the setting for attaching buttons and secure the twine to the bag and seal it up at the same time. I've been told you can use fabric glue as well, but I haven't tried it. I have stapled the bag to close it but wasn't happy with the results.

4. If the bag is not going into water, glue small silk rosettes and/or bits of lace and/or trim. I don't add other embellishments if the bag is going to be used in water since I want to keep everything as pure as possible and I haven't investigated what types of glues and embellishments might work without adding impurities to the water.

Bath Salts Recipe:

In a large bowl, mix well: 3 cups of Epsom Salts, 1 cup of Borax and 1 cup of oatmeal. This is the basic recipe. To this, add the scent or essential oil of your choice and mix well again. If the salts are going to be given and used from a jar, instead of using regular oatmeal which will not dissolve in water, use colloidal oatmeal. Food coloring can also be used for salts to be presented in a bottle or jar. Glass should be used to store salts made with scent as the aroma will dissipate over time in plastic.

I'm going to be a grandmother for the first time later this year and awhile ago found this beautiful rocker from irrationalartscom, a fellow Pacific Northwest artisan. Hand Painted Seattle Skyline Rocker would be a perfect addition to any home, but especially one which is welcoming new life! The price is $200.00 which is more than reasonable for this one of a kind work of art.

Candles are usually burning while I work at the screen, read, sew, cross-stitch, watch whatever I'm watching on the TV while stretched out (that is when it's not watching me!). Another Pacific Northwest favorite shop of mine is RusticCandles from Port Orchard, WA. The shop is full of wonderful, aromatic soy candles. The 8-ounce size will burn approximately 50 hours. Wicks are lead free and soy burns cleaner than other blends of wax. The prices are a bargain! $7.00 for an 8-ounce jar candle. That's 14 cents for every hour of scented bliss! The scent of lavendar is so relaxing so my personal pick at the moment is "English Lavendar 8 oz Soy Candle".

Finally, MagnetGames is a brand new shop at Etsy (April 21, 2009) which also happens to be homebased here in the Pacific Northwest. I was cruising through Alchemy requests and found this gem last night. MagnetGames' offerings include magnets made from beads of some favorite computer and other games, like PacMan, Ms. PacMan, Sudoku, Mario, etc. I want Ms. PacMan for my fridge and another one for my cubie at work! The prices are reduced to help introduce this new shop. The PacMan Magnet Set is $15.00 and there are add-ons to most that are very reasonably priced. The PacMan and Ms. PacMan Add On is currently $2.50. There is even a Tic Tac Toe magnet set for $12.00. Toooo cute!!!

Free Pattern Wednesday -- Father's Day Will Be Here Soon!

Good morning (or afternoon or evening)! Father's Day is right around the corner and while some of us have lost our dads, there are those of you who are searching for a different type of gift to make for Dad this year.

This simple Chinese symbol with backstitching and border free cross-stitch pattern represents the English word "Father". It is done in 2 colors, is simple enough for a beginner and could be completed in less than a weekend. It is 50x50 stitches so can either be mounted and framed, used on a pillow or to embellish something you already have in mind.

As always with free patterns I offer, you are free to give or sell your finished cross-stitch item or share the link to this blog article. Please do not add this pattern to your collection or claim it as your own. It would be lovely if you credit me with the design, but not absolutely necessary.

Quick Tip Tuesday -- Can I Schedule My Blog Post For Later?

Yes! I was wondering the same thing about Blogger when I received a newsletter sharing news about a new scheduler to publish blogs at a specific time/day. I searched Blogger Help and didn't find anything. It doesn't mean there isn't help though. In the Help Forum, I found exactly that!

I'm a newbie at disciplining myself to keep up with one blog and post every day (well, except for Saturday, my break day). The idea of keeping up with more than one is a bit daunting for me at this point .

For those who have more than one blog, I will share the information about new PostLater farther down this article.

If, like me, you are using Blogger, here is how to schedule your post to publish at a later date and/or time:

Create a New Post. Once the page opens, look for the "Post Options" link:

A box opens which show Options. Change the date and/or time in the fill-in boxes on the lower right:

That's all it takes!

NOTE: remember to change the date and time you want to publish before you begin typing the new blog. Changing it later won't stop Blogger from publishing it as soon as you click on the "Publish" button if you change it after entering text. The blog will still publish at your scheduled time as well. In other words, if you use TwitterFeed or one of the other services to feed Twitter and other micro-blogs, you may publish notice of the new blog entry two times -- once when you first click "Publish" and once again when it has been scheduled. This may not be a bad thing if, like me, you don't update more than a few items or times during a day.

If you publish more than one blog and do several updates each day to one or more of them, the new PostLater service looks like it might be a one stop shop to schedule all postings from one location. It not only supports all the major blogging platforms but also supports micro-blogging sites like Twitter.

For those of us who often post several new items from our various shops at one time, instead of inundating our followers with everything at once, wouldn't it be nice to send notices at pre-scheduled times throughout the day?

It's Not Your MaMa's Cross-Stitch ...

I was browsing for some cross-stitch books with a different and newer view and found three absolute gems for those who would like to learn cross-stitch or start a new project yet are looking for a subject that is fun or irreverent or more up to date than most patterns available.

Subversive Cross Stitch is a collection of patterns from Julie Jackson. I just love her shop, subversivejewels, on Etsy! There she offers jewelry and accessories made from her designs, as well as other items. Then there is her website where you can purchase kits or patterns.

Stitch Graffiti ... from Heather Holland-Daly is another book full of new and different cross-stitch ideas. Lots of ideas for getting started, the supplies one needs and updated, different themes on more traditional ideas.

Not Your Mama's Stitching: The Cool and Creative Way to Stitch It To 'Em from Kate Shoup Welsh not only covers cross-stitch but also new ideas for embroidery, needle punch, crewel and needlepoint. With chapter titles like, "Back Stitch to the Future," "Wear Me Out: Stitching You Can Wear," and "Present Tents: Nifty Needlecraft Gifts", how can this read not be absolutely a joy as well as informative?

Soooo, if you're ready for something new to inspire you to put needle and thread to your canvas of choice, one of these great reads and reference books might just be the thing to rev your create juices!

Then there are my Chinese Symbol/Kanji cross-stitch designs available in my Etsy shop which are new, unique, very reasonably priced and can be sent to you free of shipping charges by email. My First Custom Cross-Stitch Pattern ...

I just received and completed my first custom order for a cross-stitch pattern through Alchemy. What a fun project! Shameless promotion it may be but I wanted to share a picture of the completed project with you because I'm pleased with how it turned out and how much my customer liked it. Here is her feedback:

DPeaGreenDesigns -- My Cross-Stitch Patterns

The majority of patterns in my Etsy Shop are cross-stitch designs of Chinese symbols/Kanji words with and without borders like these pictured here:

These Chinese symbols are the basis for many of modern-day Japanese Kanji. We see them as tattoos, used in sumi and watercolor paintings, and more and more are being used in various medium as modern day art.

As simple as the designs of each, there does seem to be a mystery about each that is exciting to explore. What drew me to these to use in cross-stitch is just that -- the simplicity and the mystery.

Very popular as body art for those who are younger than me, the boomer, I was thinking how so many of our creative arts are being adopted by the younger, up and coming generation. Some were taught like I was -- at my grandmother's and mother's knees from about age 5 (to keep me distracted and out of their hair!) -- but so many young women and men (remember Rosey Grier and his needlepoint? Google him, if not...) have developed an interest in crafting and want to teach themselves.

Since I share an interest in these wonderful symbols and their meanings, as well as have cross-stitched for years, I thought what a wonderful way to bring something elegant but easy for a beginner and yet interesting enough for the experienced cross-stitch aficionado to market. It took me awhile to develop a quality pattern and include "how to" instructions that will help any beginner, yet also be a refresher for a stitcher coming back to the art after a hiatus. I believe I've accomplished this with the added benefit of being able to instantly deliver a pattern by email in "pdf" format small enough be received without fuss.

Etsy Shops I Adore -- Check Them Out!!

One of my favorite things to do as an Etsy member is to cruise the forums, find an active thread and begin at the beginning reading every post to see what others have to say and what is working for other sellers. Over the weekend, I found a great thread that was started by Timothy Adams of Timothy Adams Design about tips and suggestions for networking and exposure.

While reading, I found two shops that contained items that widened my smile to a grin of pure delight!

Flying Buttons which is chock full of amazing and fun handmade buttons turned into wonderful hair accessories, jewelry and other items.

My favorite is "The Owl Nerds and their Dysfunctional Boss-Giant Paperclip/Bookmark Organizers-Fabric Covered Buttons". These paperclip/bookmarks are just perfect for co-workers or fellow bookworms! At $5.50 for the set of 4, who wouldn't want at least one set? The difficult part would be to figure out which to keep and which to gift to another!!

UglyBaby is another current favorite shop. Her specialty is shower art and there are several pieces I have marked to purchase one day soon.

The favorite right now is "Shower Art - Wild About Him". From the description of what exactly shower art is -- "shower art is waterproof art you can hang in your shower with a suction cup. Or anywhere else." The price is $18.00 which is more than fair for a piece of what is truly "art" that can decorate the inside of your shower, the front of your fridge or have a place of honor in your cubie at work.

If You Are New To Etsy or Want To Increase Traffic To Your Etsy Shop ...

I recently found a thread in the Etsy communities where Etsyans were sharing tips and found a great site with lots of "easy to do" tips for newbies to Etsy, as well as lots of information for those who have been around awhile and are exploring other avenues to market their art and handmade crafts. Timothy Adam Designs has shared a ton of suggestions, tips and tricks to help each of us create a successful Etsy shop to share and sell our wares. His newest offering is "Handmadeology, the science of homemade".

Check out Etsy 101, the first in a series of "how to" videos on becoming an Etsy seller. More are planned and I'm looking forward to learning more from each.

In addition to Etsy 101, Tim's site includes valuable information on Twitter, Art Fire, Google Analytics, adding an Etsy mini to your Facebook site, and some great photography tips. It looks like it will be a "one stop shop" for helping any artist/crafter learn how to set up shop and market his/her offerings.

View PDF Files – Save on RAM

For years I used Adobe Reader to view “pdf” files. It uses a lot of RAM and if, like me, you’re using an older computer (5+ years old) with a limited amount of RAM, sometimes the computer will crash if too many windows are open at one time.

A year or so ago, I discovered this free piece of software which doesn’t use a lot of RAM and the user also has the capability of filling forms in and printing or saving them with no additional charge. This free pdf reader is called “Foxit”. There is a paid version as well. The free version works perfectly well for viewing. Forms fill in works well too. Saving a completed form will apply some markings to the document using the free version.

I recommend you remove Adobe Reader from your system before installing Foxit. Tomorrow, I will share another free software program I use daily which helps keep my system cleaned up of useless junk and extra registry information without having to be an expert at the removal of either.

Need an MP3 Player at Reasonable Cost?

I wanted an MP3 player but wasn't sure if I could justify the cost of an Ipod or other $100-plus piece of electronics. My son introduced me to this terrific little player that costs less than $50 from Amazon and includes software. It is 2 gigs and I have had hundreds of songs as well as several audio books loaded onto it and still have room to save a quick document or other file that I may need to bring home from work or visa versa.

It is easy to use and one can either load the software for the device from the software CD that is included or use your computer plug & play and the system will identify the device as a removable disk. Plug into your computer via the USB drive. The cover easily slides on and off.

This MP3 player takes only one AAA battery and plays approximately 9 hours before replacement is needed. If you are using rechargeable batteries, this will save money as well.

I am a boomer so am crawling into the 21st century a step at a time. I drive an older car that I bought new about 15 years ago and don't have a CD player installed -- just the cassette/AM/FM that came with the car. I use the tape adapter from an older CD player I no longer have and plug it into this little player. The sound is amazing! I'm then set for a long drive either listening to an audio book or my huge file of MP3s.

In addition to MP3s, one can also upload *.wav files which will play. I've used this player in conjunction with my subscription to Audible.
